Charleston, South Carolina, has long been celebrated for its rich history and vibrant culture. In recent years, the city has also become a burgeoning hub for entrepreneurs and small businesses. A variety of local resources and programs are available to support these ventures, contributing to the region’s economic vitality.

The Harbor Entrepreneur Center

Located in Mount Pleasant, The Harbor Entrepreneur Center is dedicated to fostering a dynamic entrepreneurial community. The center offers shared workspaces tailored for startups, providing an environment where entrepreneurs can collaborate and grow. Membership options include float spaces, dedicated desks, and private offices, all designed to accommodate the varying needs of emerging businesses. Additionally, The Harbor runs an Accelerator Program, a 14-week initiative that immerses participants in their startup concepts while offering guidance from seasoned business leaders. This program aims to propel startups toward sustainable success.

The Opportunity Center

Situated at 8570 Rivers Avenue in North Charleston, The Opportunity Center is a collaborative effort among four South Carolina nonprofit organizations. This innovative space focuses on uplifting low-wealth communities in the Tri-County area by providing workforce development, small business incubators, and coworking spaces. A key component of The Opportunity Center is the Business Success Center, which serves as an entrepreneurial ecosystem builder. This program is dedicated to assisting small business owners and entrepreneurs, particularly those from communities of color, in establishing, growing, and sustaining their operations.

City of Charleston’s Small Business Enterprise Office

The City of Charleston’s Small Business Enterprise (SBE) Office plays a pivotal role in empowering small businesses to thrive and compete effectively. The office offers a range of services, including assistance with business growth and expansion, resources for startups, SBE certification to enhance contracting opportunities, access to financial resources, and guidance on management skills and operational effectiveness. Additionally, the SBE Office organizes free workshops for local small businesses, providing valuable insights and training opportunities.

Local Entrepreneur Acceleration Program (LEAP)

LEAP, offered by the South Carolina Community Loan Fund, is a 10-week program designed to empower minority and women entrepreneurs across the state. Participants gain expert insights into business planning, financial management, and pitching their ideas. Since its inception, LEAP has received over 535 applications and awarded more than $569,000 in seed capital grants to promising entrepreneurs. This program not only provides essential knowledge but also connects participants with a network of mentors and peers, fostering a supportive entrepreneurial ecosystem.
